Smaller vegetables to combat wastage
Smaller households have a need for smaller vegetables as a means of reducing food wastage. The demand for organic and unpackaged vegetables is growing in this respect. With effect from 01 July 2019 the International Bremia Evaluation Board Europe (IBEB-EU) has named a new official race of downy mildew in lettuce, Bl:36EU.
Start construction of new breeding site
On Tuesday 25 June 2019, the construction of a new breeding site was officially launched by vegetable breeding company Rijk Zwaan. Facilities for breeding tomato, sweet pepper, hot pepper and aubergine varieties will be constructed at this breeding site. The new facilities will be constructed on a plot behind Rijk Zwaan’s ‘Seed Quality Centre’ and 'De Vesting' in De Lier, the Netherlands and is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. During the first pile driving ceremony, the company announced that the new breeding site will be named 'De Hybride'.

Limagrain and Rijk Zwaan announce licensing deal on traits in vegetables
Limagrain, through its listed company Vilmorin & Cie, and Rijk Zwaan have signed an agreement for the exchange of non-exclusive licenses for patented traits in vegetables. This exchange will enable the two vegetable breeding companies to strengthen their innovative capacities and introduce improved varieties more quickly.

The Netherlands-based firm is a valuable partner for investors in the high-tech greenhouse industry. Innovation at the Winter Open Field Days 2019
From 11-15 February, Rijk Zwaan opened its 9th Winter Open Field Days in Spain to show the latest innovations and varieties in lettuce and open field crops. Interested parties from the international agri food industry came to the Trial Demo Center in Cartagena to discuss the novelties.
